GROWTH MINDSET
Do you know a word “Growth mindset” ?
グロウス・マインドセットという言葉をご存知ですか？
This is a word defined by Professor Carol Dweck.
キャロルドゥエック氏によって定義づけられたものです。
She explains:
Growth mindset is based on the belief that your basic qualities are things you can cultivate through your efforts, your strategies, and help from others. (Dweck, 2017)
"グロウス・マインドセットとは、人の基本的な資質というのは努力、ストラテジー、そして他者の助けによって発達させることができるものであるという信念に基づいている。"
Comparing to this mindset, she explains that people who have a fixed mindset think intelligence is static and it leads to a desire to look smart and therefore they have a tendency to avoid challenges.
こちらと比較して、彼女は固定的マインドセットを持つ人は知能が静的だと捉えており、それがスマートに見られたいという思いを引き出し、ゆえに困難を避ける傾向にある、と説明しています。
I learned about this when I read a book PLAYFUL LEARNING, which I was used as a textbook in one of the greatest classes in Ritsumeikan.
大学院の時につかったテキストに載っていたのが初めての出会い。
Now I think that lots of lots of teens tend to have fixed mindset. One of the reasons is lying on a widespread curriculum based on TESTS. Imagine how many tests, including dairy mini-tests, you have taken.
そして今すごく感じるのは、本当に多くの若者がこの固定的マインドセットをもつ傾向にあるということ。その大きな理由は、"テストに基づいたカリキュラム"が汎用しすぎていること、だと思います。小テストも含めて、今までいくつテスト受けましたか？めっちゃ多くないでしょうか？
I do not say TEST is bad. I think it is important, because I understand how TEST can have a good influence on pupils’ learning.
テストがあかんわけではないんです。大切やと思うし、学びにもとても良い影響を与えることはできます。
However, TEST inherently has an aspect of creating a result-oriented thinking, so just taking a test can emerge or enhance fixed mindset because students always get some results, scores, which they tend to reflect it as the results of just their ability.
しかし、テストは、本来的に、"結果思考"を生むので、単にテストを受けるだけじゃ固定的マインドセットを伸長させてしまいます。いつも"点数"という結果に向き合うので。
This always happens naturally, unless teachers tries to let them focus on the process of how students endeavor to get the results.
自然とそうなってしまうんだと思います。
教師が、生徒たちにその過程を考えさせない限り。
Teachers' role are important so that students won't enhance fixed mindset.
生徒たちが、固定的マインドセットを拡張させないためには、教師の役割は本当に重要なんだと思います。
Again, we should try to let them focus on the process of how they endeavor to get the results.
繰り返しますが、我々は、生徒たちがある結果を得るためにどのように努力したかのプロセスを考えさせる必要があります。
Such knowlege might be a strong power for a better way of cultivating students' mind and heart.
このような"知識"というのは、生徒の"こころ"を育むためにはとても力のあるものなのかもしれません。
Therefore, we have to keep learning.
だから、僕らは学び続ける必要があるんです。
“Continuity and Change”
Growth mindset is something we should make the former.
教育には不易と流行がある。
グロウス・マインドセットは、間違いなく、不易だと思います。
