SKILLS

In English educational context, we often say it is important to improve students' four SKILLS (Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing), not only declarative grammar knowledge.
英語教育界では、文法の宣言的知識のみではなく、4技能の育成が必要だと言われています。

In this context, I noticed one thing that we, English teachers, should not forget.
この"技能"ということに関して、忘れちゃいかんあることに気づきました。

We always manage our classes preparing activities.
基本的に英語授業は、【活動】ベースです。

※I honestly say I can't prepare for TASK yet, so it is necessary to develop those activities into TASK so that I can actually make my classes TBLT, which essentially enhances the pupils' four SKILLS more effectively.
※ほんとは【タスク】までいくのが理想ですが僕はまだできていません。Task-based language teachingはもっと技能の力を効果的に養うと思うので、今の【活動】を【タスク】まで昇華させることが必要です。

Students use their SKILLS to understand the contents, or to answer the prepared questions.
生徒は、内容理解や問題解答のために技能を使います。

What I noticed this time is that teachers have to think more deeply why students need to understand the content. It is not only to improve reading ability or to learn the target grammar.
今回気づいたこと、それは、"教員は、なんで生徒はその内容を理解する必要があるのか、を深く考えること"です。読解力をつけることであったり、ターゲット文法を学ぶこと以上に。

I have been caring about this point only when I prepare for one of my courses, COMMUNICATION ENGLISH.
ここ、振り返ってみると僕はコミュ英の授業でしか気にしていませんでした。

We need to care for this point of view even when the course-goal is to make students prepare for university entrance exams.
たとえ入試対策の授業であっても、忘れちゃいかん観点だと思います。

Input is for understanding something or someone.
インプットは、【何か】や【誰か】を理解するため。

Output is for telling something to someone.
アウトプットは、【何か】を【誰か】に伝達するため。

Now what teachers have to think is why students have to tell or understand it.
それをふまえて教員は、なぜ生徒がその、【何か】や【誰か】の理解や伝達をする必要があるのか、まで考えなければいけません。

This could be the reason why English cannot be only skill-oriented subject.
ここが、英語が技能教科のみには成り得ない理由な気がします。

It is easier said than done.
言うは易し、行うは難し。

I have to pay attention to this point.
気をつけたいと思います。
