GROWTH MINDSET

Do you know a word “Growth mindset” ?

This is a word defined by Professor Carol Dweck.

She explains:

Growth mindset is based on the belief that your basic qualities are things you can cultivate through your efforts, your strategies, and help from others. (Dweck, 2017)

Comparing to this mindset, she explains that people who have a fixed mindset think intelligence is static and it leads to a desire to look smart and therefore they have a tendency to avoid challenges.

I learned about this when I read a book PLAYFUL LEARNING, which I was used as a textbook in one of the greatest classes in Ritsumeikan.

Now I think that lots of lots of teens tend to have fixed mindset. One of the reasons is lying on a widespread curriculum based on TESTS. Imagine how many tests, including dairy mini-tests, you have taken.

I do not say TEST is bad. I think it is important, because I understand how TEST can have a good influence on pupils’ learning.

However, TEST inherently has an aspect of creating a result-oriented thinking, so just taking a test can emerge or enhance fixed mindset because students always get some results, scores, which they tend to reflect it as the results of just their ability.

This always happens naturally, unless teachers tries to let them focus on the process of how students endeavor to get the results.

Teachers' role are important so that students won't enhance fixed mindset.

Again, we should try to let them focus on the process of how they endeavor to get the results.

Such knowlege might be a strong power for a better way of cultivating students' mind and heart.

Therefore, we have to keep learning.

“Continuity and Change”
Growth mindset is something we should make the former.

REFRAMING

Do you know “reframing” ?

You first make a “frame” when you perceive something.

For example, imagine you got scolded by a person, then you would recognize h/im/er as a “scary person”. “Reframing” can change the way you think what s/he is. If you change the word a “scary person” into “a person who can h/is/er opinion honestly” or “who can sincerely think of others”, the way you think what s/he is would be different.

“Reframing” is the way you perceive something that once you have already done in a different way again.

This is essentially important when you communicate with each other smoothly.

I learned this when I joined in a teacher training program, and I noticed that my mother has often been doing it since I was young, so I have naturally been reframing things when I perceive something.

But the knowledge “reframing” enables me to notice when I reframe something or other people do it. Now, I would like to give you an exciting example of reframing I found these days.

My daughter has recently started to talk a lot, and she tries various things; she wants to do a lot of things such as folding ORIGAMI or holding a chopstick.
Then she always said “I can’t do it!”

At those times, I always asked her what happened, showed her how to do them, and waited for her until she accomplished it.
But she again said “I can’t do it!” repeatedly.
She definitely wanted a [result] in this communication.

One day, my wife was doing something with my daughter.

At that time, my daughter, as usual, said
“I can’t do it!”
to my wife.

Then, the response of my wife’s was completely different from that of what I did.
She said,
“Don’t say ‘I can’t!”
“Say ‘how can I do it?”

I was impressed at that moment, because that is a very interesting reframing.
Imagine the difference between an adult who has been always using CAN’T when they actually can’t do something and HOW CAN I.

Every one of us often use CAN’T, but it could make the transformation from [result]-based thinking into [process]-based thinking to use HOW CAN I instead of CAN’T. This could enable you to enjoy the process toward a difficulty.

Since then, I have tried to say
“Don’t say ‘I can’t!”
“Say ‘how can I do it?”
Then, she has recently started not to use CAN’T.

Instead, she always asks me
“How can I do it?”
In my perspective, what she require is not just a [result], but its [process] or a [sense of achievement].

Unless you stop using CAN’T, you require just a result. Two-year old girl could be satisfied with it. However, things she needs while she has been growing up are [proocess] and [strategies]. The transformation from using CAN’T into using HOW CAN I? would make her require not just a [result] but a [process] and [strategies]. I believe that this is an idea worth spreading.

So please tell your neighbor young friends not to say “CAN’T”, but to say “HOW CAN I DO IT?” when they are getting in trouble.

LIFE IS A JOURNEY

"To live is to journey, and to journey is to live."

This is a phrase said by Hidetoshi Nakata, a professional soccer player who had been active in Japanese national team.

The first time I know this phrase was when I was 12th grader in senior high school. In those days Hide retired playing soccer in a professional team, and he gave this phrase to the title of his retirement statements.

Somehow this has kept impressing me, and this, these days, often comes up to me. Thinking about this phrase, I realized a thing, about a purpose of life and journey.

For what do you live and journey?

I often hear the phrase, "life is a journey to find yourself"; however, what's more necessary for you is to know that "life is a journey to CREATE yourself".

Reffereing to Hide's phrase, I would say "To live is to journey and to journey is to live, to create yourself."

A problem is that schools might not teach the crucial fact so that bunch of people may not be
aware that they are creating themselves day by day.

I think to be aware of this is essentially important if people want to be happy, so I want to tell it to the students in charge.

Having goal is important but realizing purpose could be more important.

Thinking of what you will be in the future is necessary but not sufficient.
The more important thing is thinking of what you want to be now.

All of creatures are to die sooner or later. You can never avoid it. That means to live is to get dying.

Then, what's the role of "school"?

What should a teacher tell to the students?

"Life is a journey to CREATE yourself"

As Hide stated when he was 29 years old, I would state this at the same age.

FAMILY

When do you feel you are happy most? What's the most precious happiness for you?

For me, it is definetely staying with my family, becuase they make me fun, happy and what's more, more energetic.

A few weeks ago, when I went home and felt exhausted reflecting how I was bad at speaking in classes, my wife came and told me an interesting and funny story.

She said "I felt that infant is very pure."

That day, our daughter, who can now speak not only just a few words, but a few sentences, said something funny.

She said "it's shining. it's beautiful", looking at her own No.2, which all of adults would never say.

When I heard that story and my wife's respose to it, I laughted a lot, and I felt relaxed.

I want to thank my family, who always makes me feel good.

I always go to work before they wake up, and come back after they felt asleep.
I can't have a day-off.
But they always smiles at me when we are together.

I don't want to take them for granted.
I don't want them to take me for granted.

, because they are the most precious happiness for me.

OFF THE TRACK

I sometime go off a tangent when I teach something in class.

Of course I know that we need a goal or an aim in class and we should achieve it, and those tangents could become distractions from achieving the goal or aim. However, I have a reason that I cannot help going off a tangent.

That's always happen when a student asks a simple question.

One day, I was teaching about a history of soccer in one of the classes, for the lesson of the textbook in charge was about a soccer.

When I was talking about World Cup 2002, which was co-held by South Korea and Japan, a student asked me a question.
"Why is the word 'South' there?"

For me, this is a great opportunity to let them think of the difference of perspectives between Japanese and English, which can be related to our and thier cultures.

For students, this can be an essential chance to accept the identity of unkonwn; what they did not know, but once they know it, their possibilities toward communication can be opened up.

This is why I cannot help going off a tangent.

Regarding an objective of education, this act of letting them think of the difference of perspectives or accept the identity of unkonwn is what Basic Act of Educaion declares.

What teachers have to do to educate students is to be together with them while they are developing their personality through variety of opportunities, coodinating and designing those opportunities to make an impact on their identities in a proper way, for that should be the reason for every "teacher" to work.

I want to make it commonplace that students think they can try something hard for what they want not only for the future but for the precious present.

INQUIRING MIND

This month, I went to Kyoto to see the ex-coworkers.
I felt weird to realize that it's been almost two months since I left the previous school.
Today I want to write about something important reminded when I saw them.

The days I had been in the previous school gave me a concept that I would like to educate in children.

That's "INQUIRY", one of the essentially important concepts for education, which I was luckily able to learn at the previous school. People call it "TANKYU".

TANKYU is a process of making answers for unprepared questions by oneself.

Simply speaking, in this context, "Unprepared questions" are the questions that people think it not easy to make a definitive answer to the question.

I think it totally difficult to set this kind of question in class, even though preparing the question itself is a great opportunity for children to educate oneself; that's why lots of schools prepare the question in advance.

However, this doesn't mean we don't have to have a great educational opportunity, TANKYU, because what we can learn by it is not short-term knowledge, but lifelong skills to live better in this complex and complicated world.

Therefore I consider how I can adapt "TANKYU" into the daily classes, and found one of the ways.

I found that we can do "TANKYU" activity in a daily class if we change the definition of "unprepared question" a little.

Originally, "unprepared questions" are "the questions that people think it not easy to make a definitive answer to the question."

I change the definition into "the questions that students get it by themselves in themselves and try to find answers, whether or not people think it easy or difficult."

This is not an original idea of TANKYU, so I can't call it TANKYU anymore. Therefore I would like to call it "TANKYU TEKI SHIKOU", "INQUIRING MIND", which every teacher can pay attention to and can be better for students' heart and mind when you talk with your students.

"INQUIRING MIND" is "a mind of a process of making answers for unprepared questions, which students get them by themselves in themselves and try to find answers".

I want to be a teacher who can teach this idea to a lot of people, especially teachers.

HEAD AND HEART SPACE

Are you tired?

I've been thinking about a sense of tiredness recently.

Since I started working, I have often been aware that I feel tired.
When I feel so, I always notice that I unconsciously put pressure on my body and I notice I don't take a breath smoothly.

What I think bad when it's easy to be tired is that it makes me feel doing something is hard and tiresome.

Another one is that it could make other people around me get tired easier, which means it is a bad effect when we work as a team: a bad factor to make a better organization.

So I tried to find the cause why I get easily tired.

Then I hypothesize that putting pressure on my body or the condition of not taking a breath smoothly might be not the result but the cause of why I easily feel tired.

Then I thought I would like to change it, and found out that I need to have "head and heart space".

But saying is one thing and doing another. To do this, I got three important factors: a sense of relief, a sense of ease, and strategies.

①sense of relief…how many times sincerely I say phrases like "it's OK.""no worry.".

②a sense of ease...don't put pressure on my body when I work, and I spend time consciously taking a breath smoothly.

③strategies...how many times I ask a question to increase what I know.

I would like to pay attention to these three things, and make a head and heart space so that I would get less tired.
Actually, the action has been making me not feel tired easily.

Now I think that I would like to be a person who is well aware of his body and heart condition.

I thought so when I went to a bookstore and read through a book.

https://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/article?a=20170405-00010002-jisin-soci

This book tells us that miracle can happen if we are well aware of our body and heart.

and I've noticed something very important thanks to writing this,

"The more we have head and heart space, the more we can appreciate things, because that makes us be aware of things."

I want to keep paying attention to the three factors.
