EVALUATION

Writing a new article in a while.

I get very busy every February.
I quit writing last year because I got much more busier in March, but somehow I can cotinue this year.
久しぶりのブログです。
昨年度同様に仕事で激動の2月、昨年度はここでやめちゃいましたが、今年はなんとか続けられそうです。

I want to write about "EVALUATION".
Does it sound priggish?
Some people might think that the word seems for higher positioning people, because purposes of the word tend to focus on "controling" or "mamaging".
For examle, when you hear the word, you would imagine "grade" or "test", wouldn't you?
今日は【評価】について。
【評価】って堅苦しい言葉な感じ僕だけでしょうか?
立場が上の人から下の人への表現というイメージありませんか??
それはきっと目的が、管理のため、になっていることが多いからだと思います。
評価と言われてパッと思い浮かべるのは、テストとか成績とかではないですか??

However, not only for those purposes, we always EVALUATE things everywhere.
Above all, it is a crucial role for IMPROVEMENT.
でも実は僕らは至る所で【評価】していて、
それはとりわけ【成長】には重要な役割を果たしています。

Without EVALUATION, you would be blind at what you cannot do and you can do.
If you do not know your weakness and strength, you would never try to utilize your strength or overcome your weakness, and just always tackle whatever you cannot do (it could be important sometimes though).
【評価】なしでは、なにができて、なにができないのかもわからない。自分の弱みや強みがわからなければ、強みを活かそうともできないし、弱みを克服しようともできず、ただできないことに向かってやみくもに突っ走るだけになってしまう(やみくもが大切なときももちろんありますが、いつもではないはずです)

EVALUATION has a variety of types. When we simply divide into two, they would be "self-evaluation " and "other's evaluation".
【評価】って、いろんなタイプいろんな分け方があると思います。
簡単に2つの観点で見たときに
自己評価
他者評価
があると思います。

For teachers, we need to make students understand the importance of "self-evaluation" and make them do it properly so that the students continue to try to improve themselves.
教員は生徒を適切に自己評価させて自分にできないこと➕1を目指し続けさせる必要があります。

At the same time, we make them evaluate each other in a good way to make a positive and collaborative relationship so that they respect each other and aim high contemplatively.
同時に、他者評価しあわせる中で、建設的に互いを認め、高み、深みを目指しあえる人間関係づくりをさせていかねばなりません。

Also, what I don't want to forget is that a teacher evaluates them as one of the others.
そして、教員自体が一人の他者として、生徒を評価する必要があります。

It's never because we are at a higher position. Rather, we support them carefully.
If students are heading to somewhere wrong, we make it sure together where the way they want to get ahead is.
決して上からではなく、
むしろ下から支えるかの如く。
間違った方向へ進みそうであれば、一緒に前を向いて進むべき道を確認しながら。

This is EVALUATION that we should be aware of.
これが我々が意識しないといけない【評価】のあり方だと思います。

I just know really little about what the best way to EVALUATE each individual pupil is.
一人ひとりを育むためにどう【評価】をしていけばいいのか、まだまだわからないことだらけです。

The only one of the truths I can say now is that "EVALUATION is essentially important, but there is something more important than EVALUATION."
一つ確かなこと、それは
「【評価】はとても大切だがもっと大切なことがある」
ということ。

That is a prerequisite of EVALUATION.
Let me talk about it some times later.
それは【評価】の前提にあるものです。
が、その話はまた今度。

LOANWORD

Do you know Japanese words which became into English?
みなさんは英語になっている日本語を知っていますか?

They're called "loanword", which means a word taken into one language from another (Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, Fifth EditionLDOCE5 © Pearson Education Limited 2009, 2011).
"借用語"と言われるものです。

Recently I read an interesting article about it, so I want to share what I felt in the article.
最近そのことに関した面白い記事を読んだので是非共有させてください。

This is it.
これです。http://www.japantimes.co.jp/life/2017/01/02/language/japanese-affecting-english-lexicon-new-ways/#.WINP6ERKOEc

This explains things about loanwords.
e.g. how Japanese words become English.
借用語に関した説明がのっています。
例えば、どんな風に日本語が英語になるかとか。

I did not know that "emoji" is in Oxford English Dictionary, which dubbed it as the word of the year 2015!
"絵文字"もオクスフォード辞典にのってるんですね、しかも2015年のワードオブザイヤーやったとわ!

Then nowadays the quality of Japanese words which become English is changing.
そして何やら、英語になる日本語の質というものが変わっているらしいんです。

The author of this article references:
以下を引用してます。

Indra Levy, associate professor of Japanese literature at California’s Stanford University, notes that whereas precedents often named a specifically Japanese object (“geisha” or “anime”), the latest loanwords represent a new level of interplay between Japan and the world.
She says these words show, “the broadening and deepening of Japan’s international influence on ‘high popular culture,’ by which I mean the vocabulary of daily life — eating, emailing or texting, and consuming — shared by countries around the world that enjoy large middle-class populations.”

This means that people in Western countries accepted Japanese objects in the past, but they has done Japanese concepts nowadays.
つまり、西欧が、昔は日本の"モノ"を受け入れていたが今はそれが"概念"になっているらしいです。

I've never thought "dashi" or "umami" now becomes into English.
まさか"出汁"や"旨味"が英語になっているなんて…

Can you imagine what "bokeh" is?
"ボケ"って何かわかりますか?

This is used "to describe the soft-focus look provided by expensive lense".

How about "KonMari"?
では、"コンマリ"は?

This article introduces:
記事が例も出してくれてます。

By 2016, in a New York Times magazine feature, a writer was quoting a woman saying she had “KonMaried” her boyfriend.
“Having tidied everything in her home and finding she still distinctly lacked happiness,” the author writes, “she held her boyfriend in her hands, realized he no longer sparked joy and got rid of him.”

What I learned is that we, Japanese people, definitely have our unique cultural sensibility.
何を学んだかというと、我々日本人は確実に独特の文化的な感性をもっているというのことです。

Expressing them in our language means that we express our culture.
それらを言語を通して発信することは、文化を発信することになるんだなと。

High school students often asks like this:
how can I say 〜 in English??
高校生、めっちゃ聞くんです。
"先生、〜って英語でなんて言うんですか??"

って。

e.g. I rememer when I just became a teacher, one of the students asked me what "kenage" is in English, which made me consider how I can explain "kenage" in English.
そう言えば高校の教員になりたての時、"健気"に関してめっちゃ考えさせられたなぁ〜。

Now I think that we can use the Japanese word though we also need to paraphrase it.
今は思うのは、その日本語を使えば良いといいのではないかということです。その言葉使っちゃっていいですよね、続けて説明(パラフレーズ)すれば。

Of course, this could distract the main topic of the conversation, so we need to pay attention to it not to get out of the discourse.
もともとの話の筋を逸らすのはもちろんダメですが。

Now I think I want to adapt this idea into my dairy classes: grammar practice, regular activity, or conversation practice.
これはクラスでも使えると思います。
関係代名詞の継続用法の指導はこれで決定です笑
帯活動でやっても面白い。
なりきりcoversationのshareの時にも使えるなぁ。

I am very glad to read the article!
ほんとこの記事読めて良かった!

This can be one of the ways to improve expressiveness of our culture.
文化発信力を鍛えるヒントを発見できました!

Finally, I would like to introduce one of the scenes from back to the future Ⅲ.
最後に、バックトゥザ・フューチャー3(1990)でのワンシーンを紹介します。

Colt Gun Salesman:
Hey, just tell me one thing...where'd you learn to shoot like that?

Marty:
Seven-eleven.

I was surprised and excited that he said this word.
この言葉を聞いた時、めっちゃ驚きました。

Japanese things were now widely accepted in the world even in 1990.

1990年にはセブンイレブンはもう海外で受け入れられていたんですね。

SKILLS

In English educational context, we often say it is important to improve students' four SKILLS (Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing), not only declarative grammar knowledge.
英語教育界では、文法の宣言的知識のみではなく、4技能の育成が必要だと言われています。

In this context, I noticed one thing that we, English teachers, should not forget.
この"技能"ということに関して、忘れちゃいかんあることに気づきました。

We always manage our classes preparing activities.
基本的に英語授業は、【活動】ベースです。

※I honestly say I can't prepare for TASK yet, so it is necessary to develop those activities into TASK so that I can actually make my classes TBLT, which essentially enhances the pupils' four SKILLS more effectively.
※ほんとは【タスク】までいくのが理想ですが僕はまだできていません。Task-based language teachingはもっと技能の力を効果的に養うと思うので、今の【活動】を【タスク】まで昇華させることが必要です。

Students use their SKILLS to understand the contents, or to answer the prepared questions.
生徒は、内容理解や問題解答のために技能を使います。

What I noticed this time is that teachers have to think more deeply why students need to understand the content. It is not only to improve reading ability or to learn the target grammar.
今回気づいたこと、それは、"教員は、なんで生徒はその内容を理解する必要があるのか、を深く考えること"です。読解力をつけることであったり、ターゲット文法を学ぶこと以上に。

I have been caring about this point only when I prepare for one of my courses, COMMUNICATION ENGLISH.
ここ、振り返ってみると僕はコミュ英の授業でしか気にしていませんでした。

We need to care for this point of view even when the course-goal is to make students prepare for university entrance exams.
たとえ入試対策の授業であっても、忘れちゃいかん観点だと思います。

Input is for understanding something or someone.
インプットは、【何か】や【誰か】を理解するため。

Output is for telling something to someone.
アウトプットは、【何か】を【誰か】に伝達するため。

Now what teachers have to think is why students have to tell or understand it.
それをふまえて教員は、なぜ生徒がその、【何か】や【誰か】の理解や伝達をする必要があるのか、まで考えなければいけません。

This could be the reason why English cannot be only skill-oriented subject.
ここが、英語が技能教科のみには成り得ない理由な気がします。

It is easier said than done.
言うは易し、行うは難し。

I have to pay attention to this point.
気をつけたいと思います。

ENGLISH PRESENTATION STRUCTURE

One of my favorite movies is back to the futre by Robert Zemeckis.
最も好きな映画、ロバートゼメキスの「バックトゥザフューチャー」です。

I might have watched it for the first time when I was in elementary school.
初めて見たのは小学生やと思います。

I went to my hometown the day before yesterday and I found it recorded,
then I could not help watching all of the series.
一昨日実家に帰った際に、たまたま録画し直していたので、いてもたってもいられなくなり観てしまいました。

The main characters go and come across the past, present and the future.
過去、現在、未来、もっと過去をいったりきたりする壮大な物語。

Then, while I was watching it, I realized something very important.
観ている最中、すごい大切なことに気づきました。

I think the keyword which has been in my mind and it synchronized with the movie.
最近自分の中にあったキーワードと結びつきました。

It is "the factor with which you think something is interesting and exciting."
ワクワクを生み出す方法で大切なこと。

It is not kind of new perspective, but I think we should take it important.
ずっと言われてきたことかもしれないですが…

It is "TURN"
【転】の存在

within "INTRODUCTION, DEVELOPMENT, TURN, CONCLUSION".
起承転結の【転】

I don't know if there is other appropriate expression to this yojijukugo.
起承転結とは英語で似た表現はあるんかな?

This is a topic which can be adapted to English presentations.
これ英語のプレゼンにも繋がる話題やなぁと。

Regarding English presentation, I thought the ordinary pattern "INTRODUCTION, BODY, CONCLUSION" was the most important.
英語プレゼンに関しては、僕はずっと、序論本論結論が一番大切と思い込んでました。

However, these days I feel that is not true because most of fascinating TED presentations do NOT use the ordinary structure.
でも最近そうじゃないと感じます。よくよく考えると、TEDの面白いプレゼン、決して序論本論結論の順じゃない。

Of course They have a very clear message,
一貫したメッセージを匂わせつつ、

but the structure is often "INTRODUCTION, DEVELOPMENT, 'TURN', CONCLUSION".
起承【転】結があるもの。

Do you think those TED presentations can be interesting because I am used to the structure?
これは自分が日本人やから感じること?

Actually, I often choose what I watch from the "popular" category.
いや、「人気」のところで選んでいるからきっとそう。

This awareness can change the way I teach English presentation.
生徒へのプレゼン指導も、あり方が変わってきます。

Making students improve English logical structure is absolutely essential.
英語のロジックを鍛えるのはもちろん必要なことです。

But English presentation should be freer.
でも、プレゼンはもっと自由であるはず。

( of course, it depends on the types of audience or situations.)
(もちろん状況やオーディエンスによりますが…)

I would like to create the curriculum of making students improve a variety of situational presentations.
様々な状況でのタイプ別プレゼン能力を鍛えるカリキュラム考えねばなぁーと思いました。

Finally, I would like to introduce the last phrase of the movie that impressed me a lot.
最後に、すごく胸をうったフレーズを紹介します!

Doc:

"it means that the future hasn't been written yet. No one's has. Your future is whatever you make it. So make it a good one. Both of ya!"
ドク

「未来はまだ書かれていないということだ。誰のものも。未来とは、君が創るものだからな。2人とも、いい未来をな!」

REFLECTION OF 2016

Last year, I set three goals:
【OUT OF CLASS】
1. I will see other teachers' classes at least 1 period a week
2. I will read books about Evaluation and Assessment at least three chapters every week
3. I will take university entrance examinations by myself at least once a month, and analyze it

去年、3つの目標を設定しました。
【授業外にて】
1. 週に1時間は他の先生の授業をみる
2. 評価や評定に関する本を最低3章毎週読む
3. 月に1度、1校分の大学入試を解き問題を分析する

Honestly speaking, I achieved only one of them.
正直、達成したのは1つのみ。

The reason is that I couldn't catch up with my daily jobs so I could not have time to do them.
理由は、そもそも仕事に手一杯で時間がなかったからです。

But this cannot be a truth.
ただ、これは真実ではないと思います。

I mean, I was busy, but it does NOT mean that I did not have time.
つまり、"忙しかったこと"は事実だとしても、"時間がなかった"とは別物だという事。

Time is elastic. There is time even though we are busy.
We can choose what to do anytime.
This is what I realized these days.
時間は弾力性があります。いくら忙しくても、時間はある。
いつでも、することは選べるんです。
これが、最近学んだ事。

This year, I am busy. That is a fact, but I always remember "there is time".
今年もきっと忙しいです。それが事実であったとしてもいつも心に留めておきたい。
「時間はある」ということ。

I again set these goals:
【OUT OF CLASS】
1. I will see other teachers' classes at least 1 period a week
2. I will read books about Evaluation and Assessment at least three chapters every week
3. I will take university entrance examinations by myself at least once a month, and analyze it
今年も設定します。
【授業外にて】
1. 週に1時間は他の先生の授業をみる
2. 評価や評定に関する本を最低3章毎週読む
3. 月に1度、1校分の大学入試を解き問題を分析する

I will write down precise to-do in my personal organizer so that I won't forget these goals.
忘れないためにも、具体的にすることを手帳に書き込もう。

ENGLISHES

The differences between EnglishES are interesting.

英語間の違い、というのは面白いなぁと思います。

One example is the deferences between American English and British English.
一つの例が、アメリカ英語とイギリス英語の違い。

I have never paid attention to the details of the aspects of speaking, i mean I have thought that the accent is different (i.e. you don't pronounce "r" sound unless it appear at the first letter in British English.), but the intonations are totally different from each other; you have high degree of the deference of intonation in American English
今まで、スピーキングに関して、あまり詳しく考えたことがありませんでした。というのも、アクセントの違い(イギリス英語は、rの音は単語の最初の音は発音するが後に来る時に発音しない 等)とかは考えてましたが、イントネーションも全く違うんですよね。アメリカ英語は高低差がすごく激しい。

Here we can see how it can be different from each other.
この動画を見たらよくわかります。

What i'm interested in most is that the way how British people in this youtube video vocalized American English
何が面白いって、この動画のイギリス人の人たちが、アメリカ英語を発するその発し方です。

They may be exaggerated but very comprehensible to understand the difference between those two languages.
大げさにいってるとは思いますが、2つの英語の違いがすごくわかりやすい。

Plus, I think it funny because we also talk about this kind of things in Japanese, the difference between Kansai and Kanto dialects.
そして、可笑しいなぁと思うのが、こういうことって日本語の、関西弁と標準語でもよく言うなぁと。

These are just dialect, but the differences between EnglishES go beyond national borders.
こちらはただの方言ですが、英語間の違いは国境を越えます。

and language is always with its culture, which means there are some cultural differences between Kansai and Kanto in a similar way that Britain and America are different.
そして言語は文化とともにあります。つまり、イギリスとアメリカが違うように、関西と関東も違うんですよね。

The time when we communicate with Japanese people also would be an intercultural communication even though we are the same nationality.
日本人とコミュニケーションとる時でさえ、国籍がたとえ同じだとしても、異文化間のコミュニケーションなのか、と気づいた瞬間でした。
