OPTION
Recently I realized that we have only two choices when we make a mistake.
僕たちは、ミスを犯した時、2つの選択肢のみあるということに最近気づきました。
One is trying to justify the reason why it happened, and the other is trying to find out the remedy to improve ourselves.
一つは、なんでそれが起きてしまったかという理由を正当化しようとすること。そしてもう一つは、改善策を見つけようとすること。
maybe we already know that choosing the latter option is essential, but I think excuting it is difficult at the same time.
後者がいいだろうということは多分僕らはわかってると思います。けど、行うは難しだとも思います。
I sometimes hear that we should make a lot of mistakes while we are young, and I totally agree with the opinion. Then now I think the point of the phrase is that we need to practice to know the various ways to find out a remedy.
時々若いうちにたくさん失敗すべきだという事を聞きます。この意見には賛成です。今思うのは、その言葉のポイントは、改善策をどのように見つけるかという方法を知るために練習する必要があるんだということです。
Teachers are required to see this point when the students did make a mistake.
教師は、生徒たちがミスをしたとき、ここのポイントを見守る必要があるんだなぁ、と感じました。
Justification in an incorrect way can develop an envy.
We may not have to justify ourselves, but just have to think of the remedy.
間違った正当化は、嫉妬心を育てるかもしれない。
僕らには、正当化も必要ないのかもしれません。ただ、改善策を考えたらいいんだと思います。
THE MODEL UNITED NATIONS
I went to Taiwan for a business trip and came back day before yesterday.
出張で台湾へ行っており、一昨日帰ってきました。
One of the best senior high schools in Taipei held a model united nations, inviting 200 students from all over Taiwan. I accompanied four students who joined the model united nations.
I am curious with how many of you have ever joined this kind of conference.
模擬国連のような会議へ参加したことがある人がどのくらいいるのか、すごく興味があります。
This is the first time for me to see it. Honestly speaking, I was overwhelmed by its "honorificabilitudinity". What I was impressed is the fact that the conference was held by the students themselves.
僕にとって、初めての体験でしたが、
本当に、そのすごさに圧倒されました。中でも最も感銘を受けたのは、その会議が、生徒たち自身で催されていたということです。
The student who hosted us was almost like a guide who professionally got taught how to invite the customer politely. I would appreciate everything that she did for us.
我々をもてなしてくれた生徒さんは、もはやプロのガイドさんのようでした。本当に、ありがとうございました。
I was also inspired by the attitude of the students from all over Taiwan. They weren't afraid of speaking English, and posively expressed their opinions.
また、台湾全国から集まった生徒たちも素晴らしかったです。彼/女たちは、全く英語を話すことを恐れておらず、積極的に意見表明をしていました。
Besides, I can't express in a word about how the students from Kyoto improved themselves. I'm sure this great opportunity would be one of the best lifetime experience.
そして、京都から赴いた生徒たちの成長も、言葉には出来ないほど素晴らしかった。間違いなく、彼女たちにとって、生涯の経験になると思います。

The model united nations is consequently required the skill of negotiating with people.
I' m now excited thinking how it can be adapted to an ordinary English class.

EXCITEMENT
Today I'm leaving for Taiwan to accompany four students who are joining Model United Nations.
今日、模擬国連へ参加する4人の生徒とともに、台湾へ旅立ちます。
A lot of colleagues have concerned me and my family about this business trip to Taiwan, mainly because I was chosen in an emergency situation. I appreciate all the kindness.
急な事だったので、多くの先生が、今回の出張に関して、僕と家族のことを心配してくださいました。本当に、ありがとうございます。
I would like to go beyond what I am required for this oppotunity. I will learn a lot of things.
今回の件に関して、求められている事以上のことをしたいです。めっちゃ学んできます。
This is not a kind of grueling or hard work but an important and challenging work, so that I create a meaning.
これは、どぎつい、しんどい仕事ではなく、大切なやりがいのある仕事です。そう認識して、やっと意味は生まれます。
I can't help being excited to the students and myself who will have realized something when we come back.
5日後、何かを学んで帰ってくる生徒と自分自身に対して、すでにワクワクが止まりません。
EDUCATOR
I sometime think about my job, asking what the word "teacher" means.
"教師"という職業とはなんだろう、とたまに思うことがある。
A teacher helps students learn things, inspiring the heart and mind of the students.
教師とは、生徒の心と頭に火をつけて、学ぶことのお手伝いをする、と思う。
In my case, I'm in charge of some English subject, so I always try to do it (I do my best at least).
僕は英語科なので、いつもそのようにしようとしている(少なくともベストは尽くしてます。。。)
However, I think this is not enough to explain what I feel of my job.
けど、なんだか、この仕事を表すには不十分だと思うんです。
The reason is hidden behind the word "teacher". It is a meaning of "to educate".
おそらく「教師」っていう言葉に隠されている「エジュケイトする」ということの意味。
We also need to be an "educator" who educates students.
僕たちは彼/女のことを引き出す「教育者」になる必要があるんだと思います。
A "teacher" needs to help students learn things, inspiring the heart and mind of the students.
「教師」は、生徒の心と頭に火をつけて、学ぶことのお手伝いをする、必要がある。
What about an educator?
では「教育者」とは？
An "educator" develops personal appeal of students, letting them be there and asking them if they are satisfied with their own situations.
「教育者」は、生徒の存在を認め、彼/女らを決して満足させず、彼/女らの魅力を引き出す。
I always would like to be like "the teacher", who never forgets the spirits.
決してこの精神を忘れない、そんな教師でいたいなぁと思います。
ENGLISH SUBJECT
One of the things that has been surrounding English eduction is the debate about that the English is the subject of liberal arts or skill-oriented.
英語教育をとりまく話の中に、英語という教科は教養教科か、技能教科か、という話があります。
I think BOTH is the answer.
僕は 両方 が答えだと思う。
When it comes to the aspect of skill-oriented, English subject is fundamentally hard for students, because this means that they are required to ACQIRE the skills: THAT students would be required to play sports completely well is to PE, what THAT students are required to acquire the skiils is to English.
技能面で言うと、根本的に英語科というのは生徒にとっても大変です。言語を習得しなくてはならない、つまり、体育でスポーツをするときにめっちゃ上手くプレイ出来るようになることを求められているのです。
In view of this, teachers essentially need to be a COACH for the students' English skill training.
この点から考えると、英語教員は生徒の英語トレーニングのコーチにならねばなりません。
If it is a club activity, there's just a way for students, which is "DO or DON'T", because they have their goals as a club.
ただ、もしクラブなら「やるかやらないか」で通じます。クラブとしての目標があると思うので。
However, since it is a subject for which not all the students are highly motivated to acquire English skills, it's not easy for teachers to make them study and use English in class.
しかし、全員がものすごくやる気があるとは限らない、「教科」なので、教員にとっても全員を勉強させ英語を使用させるのは簡単ではありません。
But, i would say it's true that most of them, in fact, want to acquire those English skills.
ただ、ほんまは、生徒たちはみんな英語ができるようになりたいと思ってると、僕は思います。
What teachers need to do is that not to ask them "will you DO or DON'T", but diagnose them asking "what made you DON'T", then help them to increase what they can do with their own situations.
教員の仕事は、「やるかやらないか？」を問うことではなく、「なんでやらないのか」を問いつつ、彼/女らをちゃんと診ることです。そして彼/女らの状況で、出来ることを増やしてあげることです。
Counseing is an essential factor when teachers want to educate the students.
カウンセリングは、生徒をエヂュケイトする上で必要不可欠な要素だと、僕は思います。

REVISING
One of my jobs is so called "public relations".
僕の仕事のひとつに、いわゆる「広報」というものがあります。
One thing I have to do is to ask students to write a kind of essay about their activities of some paticular events and to touch up, revise and emend the essays they submitted.
その仕事で、生徒に対して、彼/女たちの何かしらのイベントの際の活動に関して、エッセイを書いてもらい、それらを添削し、修正、校正をします。
I have revised them repeatedly many times, and today I really realized that I had been better at rivising essays students wrote.
なんども繰り返して訂正するのですな、今日、生徒の書いたものを訂正すること自体がすごく上達していると感じました。
That feeling reminded me of the feeling I felt recently that I have been being a little better at writing things.
最近、なんだか何かを書くことに対して以前より得意になってきているなぁと感じていたことを思い出したのですが、
Now I'm sure that revising or emending writings can make you be better at writing other things.
書き物を修正したり校正したりすることは、他のものを書くときの書く力を向上させるんだなぁと思いました。
This can be adapted to writing practice in English class. When it comes to writing practice, students need to have the opportunity to revise and emend what they wrote REPEATEDLY.
これは、英語授業のライティングの練習にも言えることだと思いました。ライティング練習に関して言うと、生徒は繰り返し自分たちの書いたものを訂正し校正する機会が必要です。
Maybe, most of writing practice carried out in class are insufficient to improve pupils' writing ability.
おそらく授業で行われる多くのライティング練習では、生徒のライティング能力をあげるにはまだ不十分なのかなぁと思います。
I would like to have the students repeatedly have the opportunity to revise and emend what they write in the current lesson.
いま行っているレッスンで、繰り返して彼/女が彼/女らの書いたものを訂正し校正する機会を作りたいと思いました。
